Windows 7 "Black Screen of Death" Attributed to Malware

In October, Microsoft released its latest generation of operating system: Windows 7.

Users of previous versions of Windows may be familiar with the nicknamed "blue screen of death" that occurs from a hardware or driver failure. Since the Windows 7 release, users have reported a mysterious "black screen of death" that cripples its access. Though unlike its blue predecessor, the "black screen" is the symptom of a much-less serious issue.

This new phenomenon occurs just after the user login screen and displays a solid black screen instead of loading the desktop. It was originally attributed to a flaw in Microsoft's own security update and had been reported to affect Windows 2000, NT, Vista, and XP as well.

The good news is that this is no longer found to be true.

Microsoft quickly investigated the claims made by the software firm Prevx that had submitted the report and determined that none of the changes made by their November security update could have produced that kind of issue. Prevx has since retracted their claims and publicly apologized for their mistake. They stated that their conclusion may have been too hasty and that the challenge of identifying the cause of the issue was difficult.

The current diagnosis is that the "black screen" is caused by malware; most likely Daonol. Daonol is a trojan that affects network traffic. It steals FTP information, blocks security websites, disables access to certain system functions, and redirects web searches to sites containing more infectious malware.

Millions of Windows 7 users that may be affected by the "black screen" may be forced to re-install the operating system from scratch. Microsoft suggest that in preventing future infection from similar malware, users should use strong firewall and anti-virus software, as well as installing the latest Windows updates whenever they're available.

Microsoft also welcomes its users to contact their customer service lines, should they experience concerns for their own Windows PC.

Prevx is working on a less-extreme fix for users to resolve the issue. So far, they've developed a fix that has been successful, though it does not yet work for all systems. They claim with confidence that if users have only started experiencing the "black screen" since mid-November or after running any system security software (including Prevx), their current solution is likely to work.

To expand on their current understanding of the "black screen" phenomenon, a Prevx representative stated that the software firm has found at least ten different scenarios that might create that kind of effect. In fact, they believe that this issue has actually been around for years.

Backing Up Ain't Hard To Do!

If there's one tip that I could ever pass on to our fellow computer users, it's to routinely back up your data. Heaven forbid, but there may come a time, when you least expect it, that your computer's hard drive will be damaged or fail. This can be especially devastating if any of your important files can no longer be accessed from the drive. Or worse, destroyed.

Data stored on our laptop hard drives are most critical, since they can be more expensive than desktop PC hard drives, and tricky to repair.

The first item that you'll need for backing up your data is some form of data storage. The amount of storage you'll need of course depends on how much data you're backing up.

For some, a recordable CD or DVD might be plenty. If your laptop or desktop PC doesn't have a recordable optical drive installed, you can easily use an external DVD burner. This should be enough if you're backing up your documents, address book, email, internet bookmarks, or other small projects.

For things like this, you should probably create a CD or DVD back-up disc once every week. I suggest doing so on a Friday evening, so you have complete peace of mind for the weekend.

You might have projects that you want to back up daily. Losing even a day's worth of work can be cumbersome, depending on what your project might be. Backing up your work to a new CD-R or DVD-R can get expensive, so in this case I recommend a portable USB flash drive. 1GB to 8GB should suffice, though larger capacities are available, should you need it. You'll not only have more storage space available on a thumb drive, but there are also security applications out there that will protect the data in case of theft.

If you have much more data that you'd like to insure an extra copy of, then you might want to invest in an external hard drive. An external hard drive is ideal for copying large media files (video or music collections), digital photo collections, or software downloads. A hard drive that's the same, if not double the capacity of your local hard drive is most recommended. As of the time of this writing, a 1TB (that's 1,000 gigabytes) external hard drive can easily be bought for under $80.

Off-site data storage services are also available. Depending on the service you sign up for (like Carbonite or Mozy), you'll be able to upload your data to their backup facility. This kind of service is useful in the event of a disaster that destroys all your local equipment. After all, if a fire or flood destroys your computer and the back-up drive sitting next to it, you're still out of luck.

Now that you have the storage, you'll need the tools to start creating the back-ups. A computer novice may make the mistake of simply storing their files on the external drive and call it a "back-up". But here's the rule: If you only have one copy, it's not a back-up! You'll need to create and synch multiple copies of your files to truly cover your bases.

Windows has some built-in back-up utilities, depending on which version you're using. You'll be able to create back-ups of files, settings, or your hard drive's entire contents.

Windows XP has its Backup Utility in the Start menu here:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup

In Windows Vista and the new Windows 7, go to the Backup and Restore Center from your Control Panel. From there, go into System and Maintenance and click on Backup your computer. From here, you'll have the option to use Automatic Backup, which will schedule a regular back-up of selected files. Complete PC Backup will back-up everything, including system files and your installed applications.

There are plenty of third-party software utilities as well; many of them available for free. Though most of the free ones will only create copies of files and synchronize your back-ups with your local data.

High-end back-up software (such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost) will create complete disk images of your local drive. A disk image is essentially an exact copy of everything on a hard drive contained in one massive file.

This is why I recommended an external drive that's equal or greater than your local drive, as you may want to create multiple disk images. You can then use these images to perfectly recreate your system onto a new hard drive. This is a fantastic ability for not only replacing damaged drives, but also for simple hard drive upgrades.

Ultimate Windows Tweaker is a free application that will open up the hood for you in Windows 7. By selecting from an assortment of tick boxes, you can optimize the speed of your PC, adjust the user interface, and even improve security.

This tool is a slim 345KB executable that requires no install and can be run as a portable app from a flash drive. It even detects whether you're using it on Windows 7, Vista, and whether the OS is 32bit or 64bit.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free utility offered by Microsoft to defend your PC against viruses, spyware, and other malware that may infect your computer. Security Essentials establishes real-time protection and runs in the background, so it won't slow down your computers regular run time.

While tests show that Security Essentials is capable of protecting your system against over 98% of the current wide-spread malware, there is a third-party alternative. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is another reliable security application, which just recently updated to version 9.

Ninite

Ninite is a fast, convenient application for quickly installing your favorite third-party software. This can come in handy if you have a new computer or have to do a clean-reinstall of the operating system. You'll save hours off the chore of re-downloading and re-installing all the programs you use on a regular basis.

All you do is go to their website and check from a list of available popular programs. Ninite will collect the latest versions into one executable installer. The program will then install all of the selected applications with their default settings. The install will also reject any extra, unwanted features (like search toolbars, etc.) that other developers like to sneak in.

Windows Easy Transfer

We all have our own style in preferences in how we use our computers. Whenever you get a new PC to welcome into your family, it can be time consuming adjusting it to match the others that you use.

To make synchronization of multiple computers a lot less painless, Microsoft offers a handy tool: Windows Easy Transfer. This program will copy selected files, email, and settings that you need to transfer from one PC to another. You have the option of making the transfer over a network or saving them to a portable storage drive.

The transfer process will complete without disruption, regardless of running into incompatible files. If a file is unable to be included in the transfer, Easy Transfer will continue with the rest of the task and make a report of non-transferable files for your review.

It's becoming more and more common for people to connect their PC to an HDTV to act as a high-tech media center. (In fact, we wrote a PC-to-HDTV guide!) Video files are easily made available in high-definition video, with multiple subtitle and audio tracks. This is an incredible opportunity for users with high-end home video cameras and aspiring filmmakers!

In order to view video files these extreme features, you'll need to install the proper codecs to decipher them. Windows Live Photo Gallery

The Benefits of Halogen Light Bulbs

One of the heaviest users of power in the home is the lighting. One of the easiest changes that a person can make is to replace the standard, incandescent bulbs in their home with compact fluorescent bulbs. As they grow in popularity, CFL light bulbs are becoming more and more affordable. In the long-term, CFL bulbs save you money on your power bill, conserves our energy resources, and are overall healthier for the environment.

Alternatively, you might want to invest in installing track lighting using halogen bulbs. Like CFL light bulbs, halogen bulbs are quite energy-efficient. They also give your home a classy, showcase look.

Here are some of the other benefits to using halogen bulbs:

Brightness

Halogen bulbs burn brighter that just about any other type of light bulb, creating the best area illumination. The light is whiter and more focused as well. This way, you can direct each light in the track on the key areas in the room, like a desk, decorative art, reading area, or a central table.

Unlike standard or CFL bulbs, halogen lights can be equipped with a dimmer switch, giving you much more control over the lighting level in your room.

Additionally, halogen bulbs continue to emit nearly 94% of their original light output near the end of their lifespan. Incandescent bulbs tend to dim below 85% their original light before they finally going out for good.

Some people may complain about the initial cost of a halogen bulb, but they don't quite realize the money that they're actually saving in the long run.

Space Saver

Placing your lighting overhead will free up valuable space by replacing floor and table lamps. Using halogen light bulbs in your track lighting or is even more convenient, due to their compact size. Installing them is also as easy as a simple twist into the socket.

Track or recessed lighting is most recommended for using halogen bulbs. Free-standing lamps can pose a hazard if they're knocked over, due to the heat generated by the bulbs. Since they burn so bright, they could be uncomfortable to the eyes if seen in direct line of sight.

Halogen bulbs are excellent for outdoor flood lights. Since they last so much longer, you won't have to be bothered as often with climbing up into hard-to-reach places to change them.

Windows 7 Is Here!

The much-awaited Windows 7 is finally here!

Over the past few years, Microsoft has had difficulty with their Windows Vista operating system, due to its early compatibility issues and taxing use on system resources. In fact, it increased demand for its previous version of operating system, Windows XP. Customers proved that they were willing to pay PC suppliers extra to downgrade from Vista to XP.

While Microsoft eventually resolved most of Vista's compatibility problems, the OS continued to struggle to please users. Learning from their past mistakes and listening carefully to the needs of their customers, Microsoft quickly went to work developing its next generation of operating system, titled Windows 7.

Beta testing for Windows 7 began in early 2009, earning quite the positive reception. Its interface is much more customizable, bringing back the "personal" in "personal computer". At first glance, Win7 appears similar to Vista. However, the most notable features are what's under the hood. So far, Win7 has both XP and Vista beat in several performance tests, proving that it's faster and easier to use.

These test results come from the open Beta version of Win7, though many more improvements are expected to be made by its commercial release version.

Microsoft has put effort into simplifying the differences between its edition of Windows 7, making it less confusing for consumers to determine which one best suites their needs. Win7 comes in three flavors: Home, Professional, and Ultimate. Home Edition is designed for basic home use. Professional Edition has more features that benefit a work environment. Ultimate Edition is loaded with additional features and is intended for those who have network administration. There is a Starter Edition of Win7, though that will be reserved for pre-installation on netbooks and simple computers.

In order to ease skeptics and to insure better compatibility with older hardware and software, Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate come with an XP mode. This feature runs a virtual machine that basically runs WinXP on the same installed PC. Users will be able to run their old software as before, though it will appear through XP's older interface.

Users who want to streamline the operating system further will have the ability to disable many more components than in Vista. This includes the Internet Explorer web browser, Windows Media Center, and Windows Search.

For PC gaming, Win7 will continue supporting the Games for Windows features that began in Vista: The Game Advisor and Games Explorer. Game Advisor is a handy tool that evaluates the PC's hardware and determines which video games will run the smoothest on it. Games Explorer simplifies accessing your installed games by displaying them all in one spot. It can also automatically checks for any new patches that update your games' software.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has offered free upgrades to Win7 for consumers who have recently purchased a PC with Vista pre-installed. Students tend to be the most careless with their digital footprints, but anyone can make devastating mistakes online. It's easiest to just say not to sign up for any social networking sites, but with so many people depending on those services and other websites integrating social networking features, it's almost impossible to avoid.

Here are some tips for protecting yourself against online predators...

Use Private or Friends Only

Most online networking services offer security functions for their members. If you do have any photos that may appear a bit shady, you should set them so that only those specified on your Friends list are able to see. Some services are keen enough to let you select only certain friends or groups can see certain material on your page. This is especially helpful if you choose to include co-workers into your social network.

By default, most online services are set to display all of your information publicly. You'll need to go into your user settings and choose what content you want to be made public and what you want to give restricted access.

Addresses, and phone numbers are definite no-no's. Avoid letting your age be known, since that may attract predators. Posting your email in public may be okay, especially if you set up a separate email account to use exclusively for your social networking accounts. If your website account is for personal use, you should also avoid sharing information about where you work or go to school.

Making too much personal information available can also leave you susceptible to identification theft. Never share your social security number or drivers license information with anyone online.

Use Pseudonyms

If you're a blogger that enjoys writing about controversial topics, you may want to use a nom de plum. Make that part of yourself into an online persona, giving out no personal information whatsoever. This practice goes back to the old days of the internet, when most users would adopt an online handle (or nickname) to provide themselves with a level of anonymity. This new stage of multimedia evolution shows great potential in benefiting the consumer. Folks in the mood for some entertainment can order movies and games on demand without having to leave home. Users also need not worry about running out of shelf space at home when their entire library can be stored on one or two hard drives.

However, there is danger over the horizon... Consumers need to be aware of both the advantages and the trade-offs of these new types of business model. You may be eager to embrace this new technology, but if you're not careful, you may lose very important rights over the things you purchase.

Have you ever read the End User License Agreement for any piece of software you own? Chances are, you haven't. Most EULAs are notoriously long and filled with legal jargon, so it's no wonder why most people simply skip it and aim their pointer straight for the "I Agree" button. An EULA is a contract that you have with the software's manufacturer, and clicking that button is your legal signature.

You may find that in most EULAs, you don't actually own the software. You are agreeing to a license to use the software, not own it. As such, the publisher retains the ownership rights of the software while you have permission to use it, just so long as you use it only as the publisher intends.

One of the top no-no's in the typical EULA is sharing or selling your software with others. As far as any publisher is concerned, the only person allowed access to their product is the person who paid for the license. While piracy is a genuine concern for the multimedia industry, publishers in the past decade have begun to cut off their nose to spite their face by punishing the consumers who have acquired their products legitimately.

Luckily, a court ruling this week determined that software that is purchased should be owned by the buyer. Software developer, AutoDesk, sued Timothy Verner for selling legitimate copies of their software over online auction, claiming copyright infringement. The court used a previous case involving the ownership rights of motion picture film as precedent for this case, since they were based on similar principles. This was a great victory for Verner, and while it may appear so for consumers as a whole as well, it's more likely that software companies will adjust their EULAs to avoid these legal loopholes in the future.

The video game industry has taken the greatest strides in shifting to digital distribution. They may site piracy as their primary concern, but it's no secret that they've also vilified the second-hand market for disappointing sales of new products.

This month, Sony launched their new portable handheld console, the PSP-Go. The PSP-Go is a revised version of their now-five years old PlayStation Portable platform. What sets the PSP-Go apart from its older siblings is that it lacks the UMD disc drive required to play most PSP games. Instead, the new handheld contains a storage bank of flash memory (launch versions hold 16GB) to store downloadable games, music, and video. Most of the PSP game library, as well as a collection of movies, TV shows, and original games are available to download from the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation Network.

Sony claims that the UMD format was a failure (and it was) that was holding the PSP platform back, again blaming those who pirated ripped data from game discs. However, there is more than meets the eye. Many believe that this is Sony's big push to not only eliminate the secondhand market, but video game retailers altogether. In the future, video games may only be available for purchase directly from the publisher, and the benefits of traditional commerce may be lost: Refunds, reselling, or even just giving it away to someone.

Digital distribution, for the moment, has provided a fantastic alternative to purchasing multimedia. Smaller, independent software developers and filmmakers have an easier opportunity to get exposure for their work. Without the expense of physical media, the savings on production can be passed on to the consumer. Rental services like NetFlix or Xbox Live Marketplace allow for cheap, temporary access while eliminating late fees or poorly cared discs.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that movie and software companies will be satisfied with that. If they're successful in transitioning the distribution of multimedia to a strictly direct platform, then we as a people lose the right to obtain property. Rather than being a low-priced alternative, digital distribution will become the standard where publishers will be able to charge whatever they want for products that you'll never truly own. Examples of this have already been shown in PSP game price comparisons between PSN and Amazon.

Fear not, for there are groups at work to protect our rights from being stripped from us. The Entertainment Consumers Association is a non-profit organization designed to spread awareness and fight for consumers' rights.

If the software end of multimedia is allowed to fall outside our control, it may be a matter of time before hardware follows. Companies like Hewlett-Packard is already working on ways to make their overpriced ink cartridges proprietary, so that third-party companies are unable to sell compatible toner cartridges at competitive prices. No, it's not catching a computer virus—it's more about how we position ourselves while we use our laptops. According to the 2007 Labor Force Survey, nearly half a million workers suffer from upper limb disorders. Staying in the wrong position for long periods of time over the course of months or years can do significant nerve and joint damage.

Below are some helpful tips for avoiding some painful ergonomic conditions that may arise from avid laptop use.

Use a Separate Keyboard & Mouse

For your eyes and your posture, it's ideal for your keyboard to be close to you and your screen to be at a distance. Unfortunately, those two devices are firmly connected to each other on a laptop.

So unless you're using our laptop on the go, use an external keyboard and mouse whenever possible. An external keyboard can be moved to whatever position is most comfortable and convenient for you. Use a Docking Station or Stand

Get in Position

While typing, we tend to lean or hunch over to get your face closer to the screen. Your back should be straight with your head centered above your shoulders. The best place to position your keyboard is level with your elbows as your arms are positioned where they're most comfortable.

If necessary, place a pillow or cushion underneath your forearms for additional coziness. Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't rely on resting your wrists on a wrist pad. Instead, keep your wrists straight with your arms and rest the ball of your hand on the pad.

Adjust Your Screen

Make gripping motions with your hands. Squeezing a tennis ball is a great help.

Extend your arms with your palms facing forward. This will stretch the tendons in your wrist.

With arms still extended, make fists while turning your hands downward.

Finish it off with a good few swirls of the wrist.

Carry On

How you carry your laptop also as important as how you use it. Try not to overload your laptop's travel bag with additional cargo. This will take extra weight off of your shoulder. To further improve comfort, use a travel bag that has a cushion on the shoulder strap. Switch shoulders periodically to balance out the burden on your shoulder muscles.

Hamster PC

We all like to joke that our computers are powered by a hamster wheel. Will Knier from Raleigh, NC decided to bring that vision to life! NES PC

In homage to the caped crusader, a PC case modder known only as "batfan06" assembled an impressive case mod in the form of the tumbler Batmobile from the recent Batman Begins film. What's especially cool about this case mod is that the case itself is a simple remote-controlled Batmobile toy found at Walmart!

Mr. batfan06 took great care to make all the ports, drives, and vents easily accessible, yet tactically hidden from casual view. LED lights were added to make the Batmobile PC quite the impressive sight in the dark. At first glance, you wouldn't expect it to be a fully-functional desktop PC; it would just look like a really sweet Batmobile model.

Microwave PC

This may be the most clever way to disguise your computer as a common household appliance. The front window of the microwave has been refitted with a flat-panel LCD monitor. By opening the microwave's door, you'll be able to access the system hardware, housed inside the food compartment. The control panel on the side has been revamped with PC controls and switches, while maintaining the style of a traditional microwave oven. Oddly, the optical drive is mounted on the top of the microwave, where discs are fed in vertically, though it doesn't detract much from the overall coolness factor.

Your laptop battery is the lifeblood of your portable computer work. The longer a laptop battery can stay juiced up, the more work we can get done between charges. And when the battery eventually dies, it can be costly to replace. More so if you have an older laptop whose parts are hard to find.

So in order to keep your laptop running strong, you'll need to take good care of your battery. It's easy to neglect the laptop battery; they don't stand out as much as most notebook accessories. As they say, out of sight, out of mind.

To arm you with the knowledge you need to maintain your beloved laptop, we've come up with this list of essential Top 10 tips for extending the life of your laptop's battery!

1. Avoid The "Memory Effect"

Older laptops that use nickel-metal hybrid batteries are tricky in how they are charged. If you frequently use battery power for a short period of time before recharging it, the battery life will gradually shorten.

For example, if you typically use only 15% of the battery's power before recharging it back to full capacity, the batter will "remember" this habit and over time will only make that 15% available. That means 85% of the battery's full capacity will become wasted. For older batteries, it's best to not recharge it until it reaches below 25%. This will improve the battery's chances of "remembering" its actual full capacity.

Laptop owners with newer Lithium-Ion batteries shouldn't worry about this phenomenon. In fact, a full depletion of battery charge is only recommended for every 30 recharges.

2. Power Options

You can easily adjust the power settings in your laptop to optimize your battery power usage. For Windows users, access Power Options in your Control Panel. From there, select the Max Battery power scheme to get the most power from the battery. Adjust the wait time before the laptop's screen or hard drive is shut off.

Mac users can click on System Preferences from the Apple Menu. When running on battery power, select the Power Saver power plan. When your laptop is plugged into an AC adapter, switch the power plan to High-Performance. You can adjust when the screen shuts off from here as well.

3. Keep The Laptop Cool

As is true for any type of hardware, heat is a killer. Never place your laptop on an insulated surface like a pillow or blanket. Avoid using your laptop in areas where the temperature exceeds 80°F. Make a habit of blowing compressed air through your laptop's fans and vents to clear out any dust or hair. And if at all possible, get a cooling pad to rest under your laptop to insure a cooling airflow.

4. Hibernate, Not Stand By

Two key areas to pay attention to while you're managing your laptop's power options are Hibernate and Stand By. Sending your system to Stand By will save some power while the laptop is idle, but many functions remain active.

When your laptop goes into hibernation, it saves the state that your system is in before shutting itself off. When the laptop switches back on, that state is send back into memory so you can pick up where you left off while saving significantly more power in the meantime.

5. Save To The Hard Drive

It may not look like it, but CD- and DVD-ROM drives use a lot of power to keep spinning. If you need to access multiple or large files that are stored on a disc, save the files to the hard drive first. You'll save a lot of power reading the files from the hard drive than keeping the optical drive's motor continuously spinning.

6. Defrag Often

Since we recommend reading your data from the hard drive, you'll need to make sure the hard drive is in optimal shape. The easiest thing to do is to defragment the hard drive every week or two. By defragmenting our hard drive, data that's used most often is kept close together. As a result, the hard drive won't have to work as hard to gather up that data, thus using less power.

As a bonus, you'll notice a vast improvement in load time!

7. Avoid Multitasking

The more tasks that your system has to juggle, the more battery power you'll eat up. If possible, try to only have one or two applications running at a time. Using the Task Manager in Windows, shut down all the background processes that you aren't currently using.

Multitasking applies to hardware as well! Minimize the amount of devices you have connected to the laptop at a time. Each USB device you have connected to the laptop uses battery power to operate. Obviously, it may not be wise to charge the battery in your cell phone or iPod through a USB cable while your laptop itself is running off battery power.

8. Dim Your Screen

Your laptop's monitor screen is like a big, flat light bulb. Turn the brightness setting of your laptop's display as low as you can comfortably see. If you're using your laptop in a dark room, you should be able to turn the brightness levels to their lowest setting while still seeing the display clearly.

As mentioned before, set the display to turn off shortly after you stop working on the laptop. Avoid relying on a screensaver while on battery power, since they tend to keep the screen's backlight on unnecessarily as your laptop sits idle.

9. Disable WiFi

If you're not accessing the internet while you're running on battery power, disable your laptop's wireless internet adapter. Even if you're not actively working online, the wireless adapter will continue to seek and connect with nearby WiFi hotspots.

10. Disconnect The Battery

If you're at home or anywhere that you can connect your laptop to a laptop AC adapter, you may want to remove the battery once it's been fully recharged. This will decrease the risk of overloading the battery. Store the battery in a cool place, since heat can damage the battery even when not in use. A fully-charged battery should be used again within three weeks in order to maintain longevity.

While your battery is disconnected, it's important to keep the connectors clean. Use light amounts of rubbing alcohol on the connectors of the battery and the laptop (just make sure the laptop is turned off first!).

One habit we like to encourage: Always keep a spare! While traveling with your laptop, keep a spare laptop battery packed with you in case your first battery gets used up.

Gmail Outage Affects Millions

If you tried checking your Gmail at some point yesterday afternoon, you may have felt some frustration. The same frustration shared by millions of other Gmail users when Google experienced a service outage for a few hours during routine maintenance.

Google had taken some of its Gmail web servers offline to perform some routine maintenance and upgrades Tuesday morning. While Google performs this kind of maintenance quite often, they had underestimated the amount of traffic that the remaining request routers would be left to handle. The web servers that handle Gmail’s web-based interface where severely overloaded, unable to direct users’ requests to Gmail’s web servers.

Gmail users that send and receive their email via IMAP/POP access experienced no interruption, since that service doesn’t require communication with the same request routers as Gmail’s web-based interface. Those who have Gmail Offline enabled through Google Apps were able to at least connect with their inbox, but sending or receiving email was disabled. All the same, tens of millions of Gmail users were unable to access their email at all.

It wasn’t just personal email accounts that panicked about their crippled services; over 1.75 million businesses are dependent on Gmail as part of the Google Apps platform. Google uses its Google Apps service as a web-based alternative to compete with Microsoft’s various office software. Google insists that web-based "cloud computing" is far more secure than locally installed applications.

Cloud computing is also one of the leading concepts used to promote netbooks. However, outages like the one experienced on Tuesday suggest a critical danger in the dependence of other entities to support virtualized utilities.

As you’d imagine, one industry that’s hurt more by Gmail outages more than any other is the spam industry. Companies out to sell us Viagra, weight-loss pills, and fake lottery winnings couldn’t reach a large percentage of their market.

Google claims that the outage only lasted for about two hours, though many users experienced and outage for several hours on Tuesday, with reports of some outages on Monday as well. Once they’d recognized the problem, they immediately brought as many available request routers as possible online to spread out the massive demand on traffic.

Also hit with a taxing boost in traffic were services like Twitter and Facebook, who also suffered short outages on Tuesday. As Gmail users discovered their email was down, many fled to other sites to tweet their complaints. Other popular social networking sites were used as secondary means of sending messages to their peers.

In the wake of this disaster, Google has promised to learn from this experience so that it doesn’t happen again. Obviously, the first step is to insure that plenty of extra request routers are in place in order to handle potential traffic during maintenance. Additionally, they’ve set up their network so that if all request routers are overloaded, they’ll merely slow down instead of refusing requests altogether.

After much apology, Google assured its users that they’ll be hard at work over the next couple weeks to implement the necessary system improvements so that outages like this one are at most, rare. While most users may be forgiving, but businesses considering Google Apps to handle important tasks may be more hesitant to subscribe.

The only exception being if you have a more casual attitude toward gaming and intend to use your laptop to play PC games that are older than 7 years or Flash games found on the web. Otherwise, expect to pay at least $1500 for a machine capable of playing current popular game titles.

VIDEO PROCESSOR

A computer's GPU (or Graphics Processor Unit) is the keystone of a PC video game's performance. What you definitely don't want is a graphics processor that's integrated with the motherboard. A separate graphics card is best since it takes care of the whole video workload by itself, freeing the laptop's system resources.

ATi and nVidia make the best laptop graphics cards on the market right now with 128MB-256MB of video memory.

SCREEN SIZE

How you view your video games is a crucial part of how you interact with them. Luckily, laptop LCD screens have come a long way in quality over the past couple of years. While smaller displays come with the territory of smaller, more portable laptops, size matters for video games.

For the best view of your PC games, you'll want a laptop screen that's at least 15 inches. We recommend a screen that's closer to 17 inches just so you don't have to squint as much while trying to concentrate on a PC game's finer graphical details. A screen with a natural resolution of 1280x800 pixels is also best for getting the clearest quality of picture.

You may need to consider whether or not you prefer a laptop with a standard or widescreen LCD display. More computer monitors and laptop LCD screens are being produced in widescreen format to keep up with trends in high-definition television.

However, not as many PC games are being developed with widescreen displays in mind. Playing a PC game in fullscreen mode on a widescreen display may cause the game to appear stretched out or fuzzy. We recommend a widescreen display because of its advantages outside of gaming and in expectation that more PC game developers will adopt widescreen display options.

Of course there are details like contrast, viewing angles, etc., but that’s a whole different topic in itself! The best idea is to go to your local retailer’s laptop displays and let your eyes be the judge. Note the specs of whichever ones look the best to you and shop around for laptop models with similar displays.

PERIPHERALS

There's always more gadgets that you can add to your laptop to enhance your gaming experience! Most laptop owners that use a laptop at home prefer to connect a full-sized USB keyboard and mouse, as well as connect their laptop to a docking station or port replicator to expand their audio/video options.

Whether you're at home or on the go, we recommend at least using a USB optical mouse with your laptop for the best possible control of your game.

The #1 killer of computer hardware is heat and laptops are notorious for overheating, due to their compact design. To make sure you have everything you need to be prepared, we've put together a list of tips to maximize your gear:

NETBOOKS

Netbooks are the hottest new tool for portable computing. They're ideal for students because of their petite, travel-friendly size, economic prices, and easy mobile web access. While they're not as powerful as most desktop or laptop computers, they pack just enough power to dedicate to schoolwork and basic web-based communication.

Whichever model of netbook you plan to buy, you'll need to make sure that you have all the right netbook accessories. Using a slim, external DVD drive is essential for installing all the necessary software that you or your student may need for school projects. Netbooks lack any kind of optical disc drive, so it's good idea if you need to read or backup any data to a CD or DVD. You may also want to pick up a spare netbook AC adapter, to make sure that your netbook can be fully charged no matter where you go.

Pick Your Power Inverter

On any kind of road trip, a DC-to-AC power inverter is key to supporting any kind of electric creature comfort. Shopping around can feel a little confusing, but it gets easier once you know the right one for your needs.

What most people assume is that more is better. The higher the wattage of the power converter, the better the deal, right? Not necessarily... It isn’t necessary to waste hundreds of dollars on a massive power inverter, when all you need is a simpler, less expensive one.

Let’s first get to know what types of power inverters are out there so we can determine what type of power inverter suits you best.

You’ll see two types of power inverters out there on the market: True-sine wave and modified-sine wave (aka "square wave"). True-sine wave inverters best emulate the type of electricity that you’d receive from a normal electrical outlet. Modified-sine wave inverters are sufficient for most electrical devices and are easier to use. In fact, most modified-sine wave inverters that are under 300w can simply plug into the vehicle's cigarette lighter.

What's important is to decide which of these two types best match the types of devices that you need to power on your trip.

The true-sine wave inverter is usually the top choice; just by it's high compatibility. A true-sine wave inverter is recommended for equipment that may depend on a strong, steady power signal. High voltage cordless tool chargers, printers, and medical and scientific testing equipment almost require the use of true-sine power inverters.

Those that have entertainment equipment installed in their vehicle will also benefit most from a true-sine inverter. Since a modified-sine inverter’s signal can be choppy, this will create distortions in the audio/video quality of TVs and other entertainment devices. This may defeat the purpose of using high-end equipment like HDTVs or Blu-Ray players. Using a true-sine inverter will maintain the clear signal necessary to avoid distortions.

The biggest drawback, of course, is that true-sine wave inverters tend to also be the most expensive. If you have any electrical devices that almost require a true-sine signal, it’s best to only buy one with a power level just above your equipment’s needs. For most other applications, you should do just as well with a less expensive modified-sine wave inverter.

In fact, modified-sine inverters will cover just about any small device you might carry with you on your trip. This includes laptops, phone chargers, fans, coolers, or most other common household devices.

There are two types of modified-sine wave inverters:

Cigarette Lighter

These are best for household devices, like small TVs, computers, DVD players, or small office equipment. Most of these power inverters can connect to a standard 12-volt cigarette lighter socket.

There are some important things to note when using a cigarette lighter power inverter. Most high-wattage power inverters may only be able to work while the vehicle is turned on to avoid any massive drain on the car battery’s charge. The cigarette lighter has a limit of 115-watt output. If you need a power inverter that’s 115 watts or higher, it’s best to connect it directly to the battery.

Direct Battery Connection

Connecting your power inverter directly into the battery may not be as convenient as simply plugging it into the cigarette lighter, but it does allow you to connect a greater amount and more powerful equipment. This type of power inverter connection is recommended for using power tools, large-screen TVs, household appliances, and office equipment.

While the alternator is running, a vehicle's battery can put out 14 volts of DC power output. In order to protect the vehicle’s battery charge, most power inverters will shut down once they reach 10.5 volts. If you need to use your power inverter often without the vehicle’s engine running, you may need an AGM or marine deep cycle battery to keep it going.

Loads reaching 3000 watts or greater may also need special wiring or battery banks.

Google Chrome OS Coming in Fall 2010

In early July, Google announced its development of Google Chrome OS, a new operating system designed for people whose majority of computer time was spent online. Google's decision to jump into the arena of operating systems was inspired by the growing success of the Google Chrome web browser, released earlier this year.

Google Chrome OS is based on the idea of "cloud computing", a style of computing where most software applications are run through a virtual workspace over the web. The key benefit of cloud computing is relieving the user-end computer's burden of processing and storing data. Data is stored on host servers, rather than on local hard drives. Software applications are run remotely on web servers and user's local computer need only handle the interface.

Based on this, Google boasts that Google Chrome OS will be incredibly fast and lightweight—perfect for users who practically live on the web. Google Chrome OS will greatly minimize how much work the PC has to do, thus giving it the system resources to devote toward a faster web experience. Google also intends to keep the Chrome OS design simple—no unnecessary bells & whistles—with the exception of establishing tight security.

Chrome OS is not to be confused with Google's similar project, Android. Google Android is another form of web-centric operating system, though it's being tailored to fit the needs of smaller, mobile devices like netbooks, smart phones, and PDAs. While the two will share many features, Google Chrome OS is best suited for more powerful desktop and laptop PCs.

Much like Linux, Google Chrome OS will be free and open source. This will allow just about anyone the ability to build applications, add-ons, and other variations for the operating system. Users who are savvy with computers can customize their operating system to suit their preferences and freely share new and innovative applications.

Google has already built up a collection of technology heavyweights for support on the project. On board to offer their expertise are Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Acer, among others. Companies and developers interested in can contact Google through the links on their Chrome OS FAQ page.

Some critics are concerned with Google flooding the market for operating systems, which some say is already crowded. Between Windows, Mac, and Linux (in its many forms), consumers may be overwhelmed with options. With the other competitors having decades of experience in the market, newcomers like Google will have to struggle hard to succeed.

Google remains optimistic, planning to release Google Chrome OS in the fall of 2010.

Laptop DC Power Jack Repair

A laptop DC power jack endures a great deal of wear and tear during the life of the laptop. With frequent plugging and unplugging, as well as the motions of every day use, all that shimmying will take its toll on the laptop's DC jack. Eventually, the metal connectors that hold the laptop DC jack in place will break loose.

When the laptop DC power jack becomes temperamental, your laptop's power can cut off at any time. This can be annoying, but more so if you suddenly lose power after completing a lot of unsaved work that can be lost. Losing external power can also drain your laptop's battery, if you're not paying attention.

Repairing your laptop DC power jack is a pretty tricky task. It involves taking your laptop completely apart and working directly with the laptop's motherboard. It is possible to do the laptop repair yourself, if you'd like to save some money on laptop repair service and fancy yourself as a skilled electronics technician.

For first-timers, here are some quick tips to get you started:

The first thing to do is to troubleshoot to make absolutely sure that it's not actually the AC adapter that's causing your power outages. Many laptop models have an indicator light to show when the laptop is using external power. If the light is on, then the AC adapter is working properly.

If you don't have an indicator light (or even if you want to make extra sure) you can connect a voltmeter to the AC adapter in order to test it. Plug the power cord into a wall outlet. Then carefully connect one lead from the voltmeter to the inside of the DC plug and one to the outside of the plug. If the voltmeter shows a power connection (usually between 14-19volts), then the AC adapter is in the clear and you can now set your sights on the laptop DC power jack.

When you begin to work on your laptop, the first thing you need to do is make sure that the laptop's AC adapter is unplugged and the laptop battery is removed. The last thing you want to do is give yourself a nasty shock!

Use a large working space. Clear off a large, open table to work on so that you can spread your laptop's parts out. Also, keep a few small cups or bowls near by to hold all the screws and other tiny parts that you may need to remove.

Use a fine soldering tip for your soldering gun. Computer connections are very close together on a motherboard. If the hot iron burns the motherboard or if any stray solder accidentally touches other circuits, the motherboard could be fried. You'll need a very fine tip and a steady hand to perform like a surgeon around all those components.

Apply solder to all connector pins. The break in the DC jack's connections may not be completely visible and it may be more than one connector that's damaged. To insure that all potentially damaged connector pins are solid, reinforce all of them while avoiding accidentally touching surrounding components.

As you can see, repairing the laptop power jack is very risky. One wrong move with the soldering gun and your laptop is toast. For this reason, it's usually recommended that you have your laptop serviced by experienced professionals.

Recycling Your Laptop Battery

Each year, thousands of unwanted electronic devices are dumped into our landfills. This includes laptops and computers that are broken or obsolete. Many of them contain non-biodegradable materials that take hundreds of thousands of years to break down. Some even contain harmful materials that are toxic to humans and are dangerous if they may their way into the environment.

The most dangerous component of these devices is their batteries. Laptops use Lithium-Ion (or Li-Ion) batteries, a dry-cell battery with the average lifespan of 3-4 years. Americans alone purchase over 3 billion assorted dry-cell batteries per year. Just as many then are thrown away, heaping in our landfills and exposing their chemicals into the soil. From the soil, run off from rain can carry them into the ground water, polluting our drinking water supply.

In 1996, a ban was put in place that prohibited the use of deadly mercury in the production of batteries. Many consumers and electronics manufacturers have also switched to rechargeable batteries to decrease the amount of batteries that enter our landfills.

Despite that, the Li-Ion, nickel-cadmium (or "nicad"), NiMH and other heavy metals in rechargeable batteries are still quite toxic. If they’re incinerated, these heavy metals are released into the air we breathe. It’s crucial that when our electronics die or become obsolete, we dispose of them properly.

As part of the law that banned mercury in batteries, manufacturers are now also required to produce rechargeable batteries with recyclable materials. Some states, like California and New York, have made it illegal to simply throw away any rechargeable batteries. The Environmental Protection Agency set up a non-profit organization, The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, to help organize and regulate the proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Once rechargeable batteries are collected, they’re shipped to a recycling facility in Pennsylvania, where they are separated and broken down based on their type. The reusable metals are extracted and then used to make new batteries or other materials, such as stainless steel. All possible elements are gathered for recycling and never make their way to our landfills.

From this process, organizations like the RBRC have saved our landfills from over 50 million pounds of rechargeable batteries from North America alone since 1996!

How can I do my part?

Disposing your old rechargeable batteries is easier than you think! The RBRC has set up the Call2Recycle program, a service designed to help people who want to make a difference. They offer free collection boxes and bags to contain your old batteries and electronics for turning them in. Most of the top retailers, such as Best Buy, Target, Home Depot, and more are participating in the program, offering drop-off centers at their stores.

To find the locations nearest to you, you can look up the listing on the Call2Recycle website, or call their toll-free helpline, 1-800-8-BATTERY.

You can also learn more about recycling other electronic equipment through organizations like Gcycle. Through these programs, we can minimize waste and landfill space by recycling old computers, monitors, video games, phones, and more!

A warning to owners of Lenovo ThinkPad laptops: If you’ve recently used Lenovo’s ThinkVantage automatic update software to receive updates for your laptop, you may have been hit with some annoying adware.

Owners of Lenovo laptops are noticing a pop-up ad that appears every couple of hours offering discounts on other Lenovo products. The intrusive ad does have a tick box for those who want to turn the pop-ups off, but customers are already reporting that this does not work.

Many Lenovo laptop owners have become enraged (and rightfully so) that Lenovo would so deviously include adware in with a software update and force them upon their customers. The source of this pesky pop-up appears to be in the latest update for Message Center Plus, an application intended to warn users of conditions on the laptop’s system that may need user attention. Normally, this would be a handy tool for system maintenance, but the inclusion of the ads corrupts the actual value of the application.

So far, users are recommending a complete removal of the Media Center Plus software, offering instructions on how to not only uninstall it, but also prevent it from being automatically installed in the future.

Lenovo has not yet given an official response to these accusations of abuse. However, ThinkPad owners are demanding an explanation along with a fix. Hopefully, Lenovo will remove the inclusion of advertisements from future software updates, or will at least give the user the genuine ability to disable them.

Digital Transition Complete! Media Center Users Still Waiting...

Did you catch The Simpsons this weekend? If so, that means that the digital conversion went pretty smoothly for you this past Friday. Of course, not everyone was as lucky...

According to the FCC, nearly 700,000 people called the federal hotline last week about the national switch from analog television signal to digital. Almost half of those calls took place on Friday, the day of the conversion deadline. The FCC had enlisted over 4,000 phone operators to handle the workload, making the average wait time under 5min per caller.

Users of Microsoft’s Media Center have been hit hardest by the transition, since the software was not able to reconfigure itself for the change in channel assignments. Microsoft has not yet sent an update to correct the flaw in Media Center, but is expected to as soon as possible. In the meantime, Media Center users who are more tech savvy can make the adjustments manually with these instructions.

The TV Digital Transition Starts Today!

A new digital era is upon us! Are you ready?

Today is the last day before analog television signal shuts down for good to make way for the digital. The digital transition has been in talks for just a little over a decade, with public service announcements preparing viewers since last year.

Several countries in Europe have already made the transition within the past few years, with the United States just catching up. There's no reason too feel bad, my fellow Americans—most other countries have yet to fully move to digital. Many countries like the United Kingdom have faced delays from technical complications and some have only scheduled to make their switch as late as 2020!

While the official deadline for the transition is tomorrow, June 12, 2009, over 800 television stations got a head-start on the switch. In September of 2008, Wilmington, NC was the first city in the United States to switch completely to digital signal. The FCC used the experience as a testing ground for how the transition may affect other areas around the country.

The common misconception is that a high-definition television will be needed for the transition. This angered many consumers who believed they now had to buy whole new (and then-expensive) TVs. While HDMI cables do carry a digital signal to a television, a high-definition set isn't necessary to continue watching your favorite shows on your faithful old TV.

In fact, as long as you subscribe to a cable or satellite service, you shouldn't need to do a thing! Those most affected are TV owners that rely on an antennae (or “rabbit ears”) to receive signal. TVs with digital antennas may need to be adjusted to adapt to the new signal, but otherwise will work fine.

A digital converter box is necessary to translate the digital signal over the airwaves into analog for older televisions. The US government invested over $2 billion to help people with the transition, funding vouchers to help pay for the converter boxes, public service announcements, and call support lines for those in need of further help.

Unfortunately, it's expected that approximately 3 million homes won't be able to make the switch by this weekend. The supply of government vouchers ran out well before they could get into the hands of everyone who needed one. Most of the people at risk are the elderly and those who live in deeply rural areas, whether because they could not afford a converter or news of the transition simply hadn't reached them. Additionally, viewers that live on the outskirts of broadcast areas may need to acquire a stronger digital antennae (even if they have a converter box), since digital signal has difficulty overcoming interference.

Less than 15% of American television owners rely on over-the-air signal to watch TV, but the challenges posed in the digital transition have inspired many to sign up for pay services like cable or satellite. Time Warner Cable and Direct TV gained nearly 100,000 new subscribers each within the past few months alone!

Others have investigated free online video services like Hulu to watch shows on their home computers. Even consumers who have grown tired of the increasing prices of cable or satellite have hooked their PCs to their TV as a more economical alternative.

Choosing the Best Landscape Lighting Light Bulbs

One customer, Jeff, recently contacted us about some landscape lighting light bulbs that he’d recently purchased from us. Jeff was looking for an solution for a landscape lighting solution that was both energy-efficient and cost effective. Luckily for both of us, he found our CFL landscape lighting light bulbs.

Jeff writes:

I reported last year that I was trying some 12V MR16 LED bulbs for our landscape lights. While they worked well, the better ones were pretty expensive at about $20 each. More recently I found a 5W Feit 12V MR16 compact fluorescent light bulbs that works very well in the landscape lights, and is less than half the price of the better LED bulbs. The Feit model number is BPESLEXN. I just finished converting all our 20W halogens to these CFLs, and they put out the same amount of light on 1/4 the power. Any noise generated by them is blocked by the step-down transformer, and the in-line X10 relay switch powering that transformer still works fine.

E3 Predictions Confirmed!

The big E3 show is just about over and the most exciting announcements have been unleashed upon the drooling geeky masses.

Predictions Confirmed:

Sony PSP Go

We all saw it coming, but that doesn't mean Sony won't go through the formality of properly debuting their new PSP Go device. It's slightly smaller than the PSP-3000 model with no UMD drive. It comes with 16GB on-board storage and designed to take advantage of the PlayStation Network download services.

Many who hoped that the PSP Go would be an upgrade to their older models of PSP are disappointed at the Go's lack of features. Sony asserts that the Go isn't a replacement for the traditional PSP, but a lateral alternative for those who don't already own one and are now considering it. The PSP-3000 will be sold and supported along side the PSP Go, just as Nintendo supports both the DS and DSi side-by-side.

Sony didn't address the "PS3 Slim" rumors, leading many to believe that the "leak" was a hoax. However, now that we've seen the packaging that's been designed for the PSP Go, there's a noticeable congruence between the two. This goes on to support the theory that the PS3 Slim is a reality that will make it's official appearance closer to the holidays.

Nintendo: More of the Same

As expected, it was the same news we receive every year from Nintendo. A new Mario, a new Metroid, and a showcase of upcoming peripherals.

In Nintendo's defense, they may announce the same next-generation ports for old franchises every year, but once those ports are released they're usually very well-received. When Super Mario Galaxy was first announced, most brushed it off as, "Oh, it's just Mario on the Wii." But now it's regarded by many as the best game of that year and possibly the best Mario game to date.

Kojima's team has also taken on the next Castlevania title, giving everyone hopes that it may yet be possible for a 3D Castlevania to be done well.

Final Fantasy XIV Announced

While fans wait patiently for Final Fantasy XIII to finish production, Square-Enix went ahead and announced the next installment in the franchise. FFXIV will be an MMORPG; the next-generation sequel to FFXI.

"Project Trico" Unveiled

The developers behind the amazing titles ICO and Shadow of the Colossus have been secretly working on a new project over the past couple years. Gamers finally got their first official look at the game, titled The Last Guardian. The story of the game centers around a boy and his giant baby gryphon. Not much is known about the gameplay, but so far the cinematic trailers have been rich with eye candy.

Save Money With Energy Saving Bulbs

A lot of people think that it costs a little more to "go green". Not so! In fact you can save money along with energy with compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFL bulbs may cost a little more than regular incandescent bulbs on the store shelf, but they'll save you a lot more money in the long run. Each CFL bulb uses less than 25% of the power than regular bulbs, saving you big on your monthly energy bill. CFL light bulbs also last much longer, so you don't have to buy them nearly as often.

How do these energy saving bulbs work? As you may know, a normal incandescent light bulb runs a current of electricity through a wire filament. The heat from the electrical current causes the filament to glow bright.

A compact fluorescent light bulb works a bit differently: The electrical current flows through the glass tube filled with argon gas and a bit of mercury vapor. The electrified gas emits ultraviolet light that excites a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube. It's this reaction that emits the bright visible light that comes from the CFL light bulb.

Older CFL bulbs were known to make a low hum or buzzing sound while they were on. This understandably made people nervous about using them, worried that they were somehow unstable. Newer bulbs, especially ones rated by the Energy Star program, make no sound at all.

We know what you might be thinking... "If CFL bulbs contain mercury, aren't they dangerous?" Not at all! It's been proven that while CFL bulbs do contain mercury, none of that mercury is released from the bulb as long as the bulb isn't broken. In fact, one old-style thermometer has more mercury inside it than 125 CFL light bulbs.

The Environmental Protection Agency is a heavy supporter of the use of CFL bulbs because they use 75% less power than traditional bulbs and they greatly reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Even with the concerns regarding mercury, the EPA maintains that using CFL bulbs as an alternative would introduce far less mercury into the environment than traditional, energy-inefficient bulbs. Energy Star also offers proper instructions for disposing CFL bulbs on their official website.

E3 2009 Predictions

Next week is the Electronics Entertainment Expo, also known as E3! From June 2 – 4, we’ll be hit with a series of exciting announcements and first looks of upcoming gadgets and software. Just days before the show, several predictions are already spreading like wildfire.

For PCs, the highest expectation is for video game developer, Valve, to finally address Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Half-Life 2: Episode One first hit the scene five years ago with the promise that the game would continue with regular episodic installments. Yet, gamers have been patiently waiting for the next chapter since Half-Life 2: Episode Two was released in 2007. This year’s E3 may hold the answer to their prayers. Maybe with a sequel to Portal...?

Despite its Games For Windows campaign attempting to rekindle the struggling PC game industry, Microsoft isn’t expected to have much to offer this year. Many are eager to see more announcements on the upcoming release of Windows 7, expected to be available this fall.

Most of this year’s focus will be on console and handheld gaming. For Microsoft’s Xbox 360, there’s been much speculation over a motion capture camera that will enable motion-controlled games, similar to those found on the Nintendo Wii.

Speaking of Nintendo, no one knows what to expect from them this year. Last year’s keynote by Nintendo was absolutely horrible, with embarrassing demonstrations by clueless representatives. This year will hopefully be better, with announcements that will truly excite gamers. If nothing else, perhaps a new Legend of Zelda title and a sneak preview of DSi exclusives.

The lion’s share of anticipation goes to Sony, whose been fighting off rumors left and right as to what they have coming later this year. A new model of PSP (named the PSP-Go!) has been all but officially confirmed by Sony, and everyone believes it will be Sony’s big reveal this E3.

This new model is rumored to have no UMD drive, following Sony’s intention to more fully embrace digital distribution through their PlayStation Network. Also rumored that there will be two versions, each with different sizes of internal flash memory to store games and media files. Many further predict that it will have a much larger screen that will slide upward to uncover the devices control buttons.

For the PlayStation 3 console, several rumors are swirling about; the most significant being a possible “slim” redesign and/or price break. Photos were leaked earlier this month, supposedly from a factory in China that is well under way for mass-producing this new model of PS3. Experts predict that if these photos are legit, Sony still won’t unveil the redesign at E3 in the hopes that current supplies of older models of PS3s will dry up from retail shelves first.

Laptop Travel Tips for Your Summer Vacation

Summer is upon us! Kids are getting out of school and it’s time to think about how we’re going to spend our vacation time.

Of course, we can’t escape completely—we live in an age where we can still bring our computers with us wherever we go to stay current with work and keep in touch with friends. Better still: Blog about your adventures! Portable laptops and netbook PCs have made it too convenient (though not necessarily in a bad way) to bring our desktop environment with us on summer trips.

That being a given, there are some important things to keep in mind in order to keep your laptop and precious data safe while traveling. Here are some summer laptop tips:

TAKE A SPARE BATTERY AND AC ADAPTER

There’s nothing more essential to a laptop than keeping it powered up. Remember to bring along your laptop’s AC adapter so that you can plug into any nearby outlet, wherever you might be staying. Also be sure that you have the right power cords and international power adapters if you’re vacationing to countries with different power plugs. It’s also a clever idea to keep a spare AC adapter around: One for home and one for travel.

Of course, for true portability, the laptop battery frees us from the tether of a power cord. Especially if you’re booting up inside planes, trains, and automobiles. The average battery is built to last just a few hours. For extra long trips and emergencies, keep an extra battery handy!

USE A TRAVEL BAG

You’ll need a place to store your laptop, adapter, batteries, and whatever other gadgets you carry with you. A laptop travel bag holds your laptop accessories all in one convenient place, wrapped in protective padding to prevent damage.

However, most experts will agree that it’s wise to use travel bags other than a traditional laptop bag. When a thief sees a laptop bag, they know exactly what’s inside; almost as if you’ve stuck a “Steal me!” sign on your computer. Instead, use a well padded backpack or messenger bag. Since they’re more common, they’re less likely to be stolen.

SECURE YOUR LAPTOP

While you and your family are out seeing the sights, you should secure your laptop in case of a break in. A laptop security lock and cable will fasten your notebook so that the bad guys can’t make off with it.

In the event that your laptop still gets stolen, you’ll also need to protect your data. A laptop only costs a few hundred dollars to replace; the private data that criminals can pull from your laptop can cost you thousands! Password protect as much software as you can. It may be a hassle at times, but it could very well save you.

There’s also the option of using a USB security key. These devices look similar to USB thumb drives and are very reasonably priced. Most of these security keys use software that will keep your laptop’s data encrypted or limit access unless they’re connected to the laptop while running. Fancy ones have features like thumb print scanners to insure that you and only you are the one accessing your personal computer.

REMEMBER ALL CABLES AND ADAPTERS

If you plan on looking over the photos on your digital camera while on your trip, you’ll need to be able to get those files from your camera to your laptop. To pull the files from the camera’s memory card, there are a wide variety of flash card readers that will do the trick, but that’s unnecessary weight to be carrying around. The most convenient method is connecting the digital camera directly to the laptop and reading the files from there. Most digital cameras are equipped with a mini-USB port to connect to any PC.

Keep a couple mini-USB cables stashed in your laptop travel bag, depending on how many gadgets you bring along with you. Mini-USB is a near-universal connection for plugging portable electronic devices to a PC. You can even use them to charge your cell phone or video games, like the Sony PSP, in case you’d like to leave their bulky AC adapters at home!

USE A WIRELESS PLAN FROM YOUR MOBILE PROVIDER

It’s possible to find free wireless hotspots while you’re on vacation, but who wants to drive around searching for one when you could be relaxing by the pool? You can sign up for a data plan through your mobile phone service for your own secured connection. Most services are able to provide connection speeds as fast as broadband!

PORTABLE PC ON A USB DRIVE

There’s always the crazy alternative: Leave the laptop at home! If you’re visiting family or anywhere else that already has an accessible computer with an internet connection, you can still carry your own software, settings, and files with the use of a simple USB flash drive.

There are hundreds of free portable applications that can easily be installed on a USB flash drive that will allow you to check your email, edit pictures, and even balance your check book wherever you go! They’re very effective for their size and you should be able to pack all you need in a USB drive no larger than 2GB.

It’s easy to find portable, stand-alone applications online, but the easiest way is to install the PortableApps Suite onto the USB drive. It comes with several popular applications and you can add as many as you want from their software library. Best of all, they’re all free!

With these tips, you'll earn yourself some peace of mind with your laptop by your side. After all, you should relax...you're on vacation!

Connect Your Laptop To Your TV With Ease!

With streaming video services like NetFlix and Hulu, watching high quality movies and television shows on-demand are just a click away. But how comfortable can it be to watch them sitting in your desk chair on a cramped computer screen? Nothing beats snuggling up with your loved ones on a couch across from a large, high-def screen.

So how do we bring the convenience of internet broadcasting together with the comfort of the living room theater? It’s easier than you think, and in fact there are dozens of ways to do it!

A lot of people will build a dedicated media center PC that stays connected to their entertainment center. This is a great option, but that kind of hardware can be bulky and incredibly expensive.

We recommend taking advantage of a laptop for this setup. They’re compact and mobile, so they won’t take up too much space in your entertainment center. If you already have a laptop, you’ll save money by getting extra use out of something you already own. And if you don’t have a laptop, they’re fairly inexpensive and you get the dual benefit of having an excellent media device and a portable computer!

Now it’s time to hook it up! The first question is how to connect the video. Laptops typically have a video output of some kind built into them. Older laptops may have a Composite or S-video connection. Newer laptops are readily equipped with DVI or even HDMI (which is the best option). Just about all will have a VGA output. If your laptop doesn’t have DVI or HDMI, then VGA is possibly your best option since it’s still able to support higher screen resolutions.

If you have a high-definition television, you’re in luck because most new HDTVs have input connections for just about all forms of video input. In some cases you may need to get an adapter. For example, if your HDTV doesn’t support VGA, you can get a VGA-to-DVI or VGA-to-Component adapter. For older TVs, you may have to get an S-video-to-Composite adapter.

Of course, one of the best options is to use a laptop docking station or port replicator for your laptop. A laptop port replicator expands the capabilities of your laptop, giving it the full array of connections found in a full-sized PC. For example, the Dell Precision E/Port Plus port replicator has two DVI outputs, allowing for a simultaneous dual-screen setup with high-definition displays.

A laptop port replicator will also give you more audio options. Most laptops will only be equipped with the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Laptop docking stations can have better audio options, including optical connections for the best quality digital sound. In some cases, the headphone jack of a laptop is rigged to double as a digital coaxial output, so you may need a 3.5mm-to-RCA digital coaxial adapter. Or, there are external USB soundcards that will come with the connectors you need.

Once you have the hardware together, it’s time to boot up! If the picture doesn’t show up on your TV right away, you may need to adjust the video software settings on the laptop. For machines running Windows, simply right-click on the desktop and click on the Properties option. In the Display Properties, click on the Settings tab on the right. From there, you can either set the TV as an extension of the laptop’s screen, or set it as the single primary display.

All that’s left is to pull up your favorite video, full-screen it, and hit Play! With this set up, you can also play your favorite games, give presentations, or watch photo slideshows.

HP Recalls 70,000 Laptop Batteries Due To Fire Hazard

On May 14th, Hewlett-Packard announced a recall for nearly 70,000 laptop batteries in response to reports of dangerous defects. In these reports, the batteries overheated and then ruptured into flames. Thankfully, no one was injured in these reports and the losses were limited to minor property damage.

HP quickly worked in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to initiate this recall of these Chinese-made Lithium Ion batteries. While HP is to be commended for their swift action, they have yet to officially comment on the recall or divulge the name of the Chinese manufacturer that these batteries came from.

The laptop batteries in question where made and primarily sold between August 2007 and March 2008. They were sold along with several models of HP and Compaq laptops, as well as being sold separately. If you'd like to see if your HP laptop battery may be at risk, the CPSC has posted an official release on the recall, including the models of laptops and batteries that are likely to be affected.

If you find that your HP laptop battery is among those listed in the recall, HP recommends that you contact them as soon as possible for a free replacement battery. In the meantime, laptop users are advised to use their HP laptop AC adapter as a power source until their new battery arrives.

Energy Star Revises Computer Monitor Requirements

Energy consumption is a serious concern for both the environment and the economy. Energy resources are a precious commodity; one not to be wasted.

With the advancement of flat panel technology, the Environmental Protection Agency is adjusting its requirements for its Energy Star program, tightening energy consumption standards for computer monitors by October, 2009.

The Energy Star program is a combined effort of both the EPA and the United States Department of Energy founded in the early 1990s to reduce energy waste. The Energy Star program is completely voluntary for companies looking to make their products more energy-efficient, though it is required for any products sold to the United States government. Products that meet with the Energy Star standards will display the Energy Star logo, as well as a yellow EnergyGuide label featuring the product’s estimated annual energy cost.

Approximately 45% of computer monitors in production meet with the current Energy Star standards. With the upcoming Version 5.0 of the program (which require LCD displays to consume 20% less energy than under the current version), it’s expected that the number will drop to 25%. Replacing Hard-To-Find Dell Laptop AC Adapters

You may find that a replacement for your Dell laptop AC adapter is hard to find. A few models of Dell AC adapters are slowly being phased out to make way for newer, slimmer model.

If you're Dell laptop uses the PA-12 AC adapter and you have difficulty finding a replacement, the newer compatible model is the PA-2E AC adapter. The 65 watt PA-2E's part number is RX929 and is compatible with all Dell notebooks requiring 19.5 volts and 3.34 amps, with a round connector.

The following models of Dell laptops will be able to use the new PA-2E family of AC adapters:

The 90 watt PA-3E is also known as part number WK890 or model number DA90PE1-00.

The PA-3E is guaranteed to fit the following models of Dell laptops:

Dell Latitude E5500
Dell Latitude 6400
Dell Latitude E6500

Lastly, the older Dell PA-13 AC adapter can be replaced by the newer PA-4E AC adapter. It has a much slimmer design, so it's more portable than the PA-13 “power brick”.

The 130 watt PA-4E is also compatible with most Dell laptops that currently use the above 90 watt PA-10 and 65 watt PA-12 AC adapters, though it's suggested to continue using those older models or their newer equivalents.

Laptop computers are a modern miracle. They allow us to work and access the internet from just about anywhere we travel with all the functionality of a desktop PC. Well...almost all, anyway.

The truth is, there just some features that a desktop computer has that a laptop can't support, like larger monitors or extra expansion ports. And in this rough economy, it's expensive to invest in a home desktop, a mobile laptop, and maybe a third computer for the office. Why can’t we have one single computer that satisfies all of our needs?

Older models, such as the Dell 2001FP, will not be able to connect.

There are those who still use the older style CRT monitors. Dell’s E-Family CRT monitor stand is large enough to handle just about any CRT computer monitor and can also be adjusted for your preferred height or position.

There are few things scarier than having your laptop stolen or compromised. Most of us rely on our notebook PCs as the keystone of our professions. There are always people out there that would like nothing more than to steal your private data.

Here are some handy tips for beefing up your laptop's security so that you can rest easy about your crucial data...

Back up your data and do it often! Invest in an external hard drive to copy your files to each night. Thumb drives are great for smaller documents. Some people back up their files on to recordable CDs or DVDs to store at home or office. You can also sign up for off-sight back-up services that will let you upload your data to a secure location. These services are great in the event of a fire or traveling.

Disable the infrared sensor, if your laptop has one. Bad guys can access your laptop remotely through it.

Don't trust WiFi! Wireless internet connection is a fantastic convenience, but free WiFi hotspots allow anyone on that network to access your laptop. This includes website passwords, unencrypted email... All the private information you need to keep private!

Rename your Windows "Administrator" account. Many hackers go right for that account once they can get into your machine. You can even create a bogus "Administrator" login and a few extra redundant accounts to throw them off the trail.

Use a docking station for your home or office. This will lock down the laptop to a more secure location, in case visitors or staff get a case of sticky fingers. It also gives you a place to charge your battery and back up your data when you're not traveling.

Use a complicated password. The best type of password is a completely random mess of numbers, letters, and symbols. But if you need to use words for a mnemonic, replace some of the letters with similar numbers. For example: "p4s5w0rd".

Don't save passwords or use automatic logins for websites on your laptop. If someone were to get their hands on your laptop, they'd have instant access to all those important accounts. Anywhere from your FaceBook to your online banking!

Finally, use encryption whenever possible. There are loads of software and USB devices out there that will help keep your data encrypted and secure.

Keeping your data secure will save you loads of time and money. With these simple tips, you should be able to sleep easy knowing that your vital data is safe.

Tips For Removing Spills From Your Laptop

Did you spill something on your laptop keyboard and need to know how to try and remove the spill? Here are some tips for removing your choice beverage from your laptop components.

The first thing to do to attempt to prevent a fatality is to unplug the power supply from your laptop, turn it over and remove the battery. The purpose for doing this is to prevent the liquid from making its way to the motherboard. If there is no sparking or smoke you may very well be on your way to a successful recovery. You will also want to remove all components including the keyboard and optical drive. In perspective, it is much cheaper to replace a keyboard than it is to replace a motherboard. If you do not feel comfortable removing the parts yourself, the best thing to do is to keep the computer upside down and let it air out for a few days before bringing it to us to fix.

Please note: The purpose of turning the computer upside down is to prevent the liquid from running down into the motherboard. So, do not use any sort of compressed air and certainly not anything like a hair dryer to dry your laptop. This will only move the liquid further into unwanted places. Also, some household appliances, such as hair dryers, emit an electromagnetic field (EMF), which can also be damaging to your computer.

After removing your battery, keyboard and other components, lightly pat them dry. You must then identify the liquid that was spilled. For example, any liquid that is not sticky (water, most diet sodas, etc.) can get rinsed with warm water then with 100% Isopropyl alcohol. After drying, it should be fine.

For sticky liquids, generally anything with sugar in it like coffee, non-diet sodas or beer, you will want to use a soft bristled, small, clean (preferably never used) paint brush to massage out the goo. The sugar from the beverage will deteriorate some circuits in your motherboard if not thoroughly, yet very carefully, cleaned. Again, after a soft rinse and good dry time (opened to air for about 48 hours) try restarting your laptop.
